FEZ, Morocco — Regional authorities in Fez are evaluating plans to construct an aerial cable car system to enhance tourism around the city's ancient medina. The proposed cable car line, projected to span between 1.5 and 3.5 kilometers, aims to connect two elevated heritage landmarks while offering panoramic views of the historic urban core.

Boosting Accessibility and Managing Tourism

The initiative seeks to enrich existing tourist routes, relieve foot traffic congestion within the historic center, and provide improved accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility. By linking high-altitude vantage points, the infrastructure is intended to diversify the tourist experience in one of North Africa's oldest imperial capitals.

Preserving UNESCO World Heritage

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, the Medina of Fez requires strict urban preservation guidelines. Planners emphasize that the project's design must strictly respect historic visual corridors. Consequently, the placement of cables, support pillars, and stations will be carefully evaluated to avoid altering the cultural integrity and aesthetics of the landscape.

Call for Investors

The Regional Investment Centre of Fès-Meknès (CRI) has initiated a call for tenders, seeking private enterprises and investors to design, finance, construct, and operate the transit system. While applications remain open until January 2027, officials note that the exact route, budget, and construction timeline will depend on subsequent technical and feasibility assessments.
